Spectacular design on a microscopic scale.
Developments in cell biology over the past more than sixty years, have revealed to us images of spectacular beauty and finesse. What in pre-1960 times appeared to scientists as mere jelly inside a cell, was now revealed as multiple different kinds of molecular machines working together with unimagined precision. The developments that led to this happy realization were 1) invention of the electron microscope; 2) solution of the DNA structure; and 3) painstaking descriptions of metabolic pathways in the cell. The obvious question was where did all this complexity come from. It does not take us long before we realize that the living cell cries out that it was created!
